Arrival

No airport, no road, no cars. Every way in is a boat.

The ferry ties up at Tonsai Pier on the south side of Phi Phi Don. You pay a small cleaning fee at the gate, walk through the gap between the cliffs and stand on Loh Dalum beach one minute later. Shoes off. Welcome.

  • Phuket runs all year. Ferry from Rassada Pier about two hours, speedboat about one.
  • Krabi and Ao Nang take about two hours by ferry, Railay is on the way.
  • Koh Lanta runs the boat from November to April only, one hour by ferry, half an hour by speedboat.
  • Boats leave early and they leave without you. At the pier thirty minutes before.
ATMs exist but the queue is long at noon. bring cash from the mainland.

Morning

The sun comes up behind the hills. The bay is glass.

Loh Dalum faces north west, so the first light hits the cliffs across the bay before it reaches the sand. Walk down from the village before seven: the bars are closed, the kayaks are still stacked, the water is flat. Fifteen minutes in before anyone has switched on a coffee machine. Then a kayak to Monkey Beach, or back to bed.

  • The bay is shallow and empties far out at low tide. Swim around high tide, float at any time.
  • Bring a mask. Monkey Beach is ten minutes by kayak along the western arm, the coral starts right there.
  • Kayaks rent straight off the sand, by the hour. Mornings are calm, afternoons bring wind.
  • Breakfast after: a pad thai at Only Noodles costs less than the kayak.

Adventure

A wooden longtail, a mask, and the bay from the film.

The classic trip. Twenty minutes from Tonsai to Phi Phi Leh, the empty sister island. Pileh Lagoon, turquoise water between cliffs a hundred metres high. Viking Cave, seen from the boat. Loh Samah for the sharks. Then the boardwalk across to Maya Bay, the beach from The Beach. One hour there, no swimming, and it is still worth it.

Or walk to a tour desk by the pier the evening before and book a private longtail for your group. Half day is Phi Phi Leh, full day adds Bamboo Island. Maya Bay is closed every year from August to September, the boats still go round the island.

Phi Phi Viewpoint. Two bays like a map under your feet.

The stairs start at the eastern end of Tonsai Village, between the last shops and the hill. Twenty minutes up, steep, in the shade of the trees. Three viewpoints. The second shows you the whole picture, the third shows you the east coast and the islands. Sit until your breath is normal again.

More massage beds than cars. Phi Phi has zero cars.

Walk-in massage shops in every lane of the village, open-air beds on Long Beach. An hour of Thai massage costs what one cocktail costs at home. After that a longtail to Long Beach, a mat in the shade, a swim, and the blacktip sharks at the eastern end if you float quietly.

The sun goes down over Loh Dalum. Every single day.

Loh Dalum opens to the north west, so the beach bars on the sand get the whole show: the cliffs turn gold, then violet, then the fire shows start. For a quieter version walk up to Viewpoint 2 at five, or take a longtail to Long Beach and watch Phi Phi Leh go dark. Be there a good half hour before.

Grilled fish on ice, pad thai from a wok, a fire show on the sand. Walk until the music fits.

Tonsai Village is a maze of lanes between the two bays. Seafood barbecue from six, point at the fish and pay by weight. Garlic 1992 for Thai, Papaya for the portions, Efe for Mediterranean. Then Loh Dalum: Slinky, Ibiza House, Carlito's and Stones Bar line the sand, fire shows from nine, buckets until the music stops.

        • The outer of the two Bida limestone pinnacles south of Phi Phi Leh, 15 to 30 minutes by boat from Tonsai. There is no beach; the island is a dive and snorkel site with steep walls, soft corals, leopard sharks and turtles, and it is one of the most famous dive spots in the Phi Phi area. Inside the national park, so the park fee applies.

        • The inner Bida pinnacle, a few hundred metres north of Bida Nok and just south of Phi Phi Leh. Like its twin it has no beach and is visited for diving and snorkelling along its walls and boulders, with reef sharks, barracuda and large schools of fish. Boats from Tonsai take 15 to 30 minutes.

        • First of the three lookouts above Tonsai Village, reached by a steep concrete stairway from the eastern end of the village (about 15 to 20 minutes from the pier area). Landscaped garden with fruit sculptures and a small restaurant; views over the twin bays. Entry 50 THB cash (one ticket covers Viewpoint 1 and 2), open about 05:30 to 20:00; older guides still quote 30 THB.

        • The classic postcard viewpoint 10 to 15 minutes above Viewpoint 1, looking down on the hourglass of Tonsai and Loh Dalum bays with Phi Phi Leh behind. Small cafe at the top; crowded at sunset, quiet at sunrise. Entry 50 THB (included with Viewpoint 1), open about 06:00 to 19:30. From here a trail continues to Viewpoint 3 and down to Nui Bay and Loh Lana.

        • Highest and quietest of the three lookouts, a further 10 to 15 minutes along a rougher trail north of Viewpoint 2 with views over the east coast bays and the islands. Open about 05:30 to 18:30, no separate fee listed; sturdy shoes and water needed, slippery in the rainy season. The path from here descends to Ranti beach and the northern bays.

        • Crescent-shaped bay on the north side of the Tonsai isthmus, about one minute on foot from the ferry pier. The water is shallow and retreats a long way at low tide, so swimming is best around high tide; the sand is lined with beach bars that run fire shows after dark. A small tsunami memorial park sits at the eastern end of the beach.

          Google Mapsmore about it
        • The south-facing bay where all ferries and speedboats arrive at Tonsai Pier. The beach is narrow and busy with moored longtail boats, so it is used more as the island's harbour and for sunset views of the cliffs than for swimming; Loh Dalum is a one-minute walk across the isthmus. A 20 baht cleaning fee is collected from arriving visitors at the pier.

        • A roughly one kilometre stretch of white sand on the south coast, facing Phi Phi Leh, about 30 to 40 minutes on foot from Tonsai via the coastal path or a few minutes by longtail taxi from the pier. It is quieter than the village with a handful of resorts and restaurants, and the snorkelling just offshore is some of the best on Phi Phi Don. Blacktip reef sharks are regularly seen off the eastern end (see Shark Point).

        • About one kilometre of soft white sand on the east side of the island's northern tip, roughly 45 minutes by longtail from Tonsai or by resort speedboat. The beach is fronted by upscale resorts such as OUTRIGGER Phi Phi Island Resort and Phi Phi Holiday Resort, with a small sea-gypsy (Urak Lawoi) village at its southern end, and there is good snorkelling on the reef in front. Bamboo Island lies directly opposite across the channel.

        • An 800 metre beach on the north-east coast, 20 to 30 minutes by longtail from Tonsai Pier or a hilly walk of well over an hour. It is home to the SAii Phi Phi Island Village resort and the small village of Ban Loh Bagao with a few shops, laundries and restaurants. Swimming is good at high tide; the bay is shallow and partly rocky at low water.

        • A small, quiet bay on the east coast with a couple of simple bungalow resorts and a fishing hamlet. It is reached by longtail from Tonsai in about 20 minutes or on foot from Viewpoint 3 along a steep jungle trail. The water is calm and swimmable at high tide; at low tide the bay is shallow and rocky.

        • Also spelled Rantee, this secluded east-coast beach lies directly below the viewpoint ridge and is reached by a 30 to 40 minute downhill trail from Viewpoint 2 or by a short longtail ride from Tonsai. It has a few family-run bungalows and a small shop, coarse sand and a reef at both ends that is good for snorkelling. Bring cash; there are no ATMs.

        • A tiny cove with white sand and clear water on the west coast, enclosed by limestone cliffs. Most visitors arrive by longtail or kayak; the walking approach from Loh Bagao crosses the ridge and the final stretch along the shore is only passable at low tide. Snorkelling off the rocks is good and there are no facilities, so bring water.

        • A long, shallow bay on the north-west coast with a small fishing village (Ban Loh Lana) and almost no tourist development. It can be reached by longtail or by a roughly 30 minute walk across the island from Loh Bagao. The water is calm but shallow at low tide, so it suits wading and kayaking more than swimming.

        • Small white-sand cove on the western arm of Loh Dalum Bay, about 10 minutes by kayak from Loh Dalum beach or a short longtail hop from Tonsai. A troop of long-tailed macaques lives here; they are wild and will grab food, so do not feed them. The water is clear with coral close to shore, which makes it a regular stop on snorkelling trips.

        • A quiet, largely undeveloped beach on the east coast just north of Long Beach, reached by a 15 to 20 minute trail over the headland from the eastern end of Long Beach or by longtail. The sand is backed by trees that give shade, and the bay is good for swimming at high tide but rocky when the water is out. Bring your own food and water.

        • A narrow, fjord-like inlet on the west coast between Monkey Beach and Nui Bay, enclosed by tall limestone walls with a tiny beach at its head. It is only accessible from the water and is a popular kayak destination from Loh Dalum (allow about an hour of paddling each way) or a stop on longtail trips. The sheltered green water is good for swimming at high tide.

        • The 200 metre beach on Phi Phi Leh made famous by the film The Beach, closed from June 2018 to January 2022 to let the reef recover. Boats no longer enter the bay: visitors land at a floating pier in Loh Samah Bay and walk about five minutes over a boardwalk, visits are limited to about one hour and a maximum of 375 people per hour, and swimming is banned (wading to knee depth only, fines apply). The bay is closed every year from 1 August to 30 September (reopened 1 October 2026) and the national park fee is 400 baht for foreign adults and 200 baht for children, usually collected by the tour operator.

        • Small bay on the southern tip of Phi Phi Leh, directly behind Maya Bay. Since 2022 it is the landing point for Maya Bay: boats tie up at a floating pier and visitors walk the boardwalk across the island. The bay itself is a good snorkelling spot with juvenile blacktip reef sharks, sergeant majors and parrotfish, though it gets crowded mid-morning. Closed with Maya Bay from 1 August to 30 September.

        • A long, narrow inlet on the east side of Phi Phi Leh, about 600 metres deep and walled by limestone cliffs around 100 metres high. The water is shallow, calm and turquoise over a sandy bottom; there is no coral inside the lagoon but snorkelling is possible near the entrance. It is part of almost every Phi Phi boat tour and is busiest in the late morning, so early or late visits are quieter. Covered by the national park fee.

        • Tham Phaya Nak, a 170 metre cave at the foot of the north-east cliffs of Phi Phi Leh, named after old boat paintings on its walls. Edible swiftlet nests are still harvested here under a guarded concession, and the cave has been closed to visitors for years, so tour boats only slow down to view it from the water. Snorkelling along the cliffs nearby is good.

        • A flat, uninhabited island about 8 kilometres north-east of Phi Phi Don, 30 to 40 minutes by longtail from Tonsai or opposite Laem Tong, with white sand all round and a reef that is good for snorkelling. It is part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park: the 400 baht (adult) / 200 baht (child) park fee applies and rangers run a small station and campsite. It is very busy with tour boats in high season, especially around midday.

        • The national park campsite on Bamboo Island, the only place in the Phi Phi group where visitors can officially sleep on an uninhabited island. Camping is arranged with the park rangers on the island (tents are usually available for rent) and you must organise a longtail to drop you off and collect you; bring food and drinking water. Check availability with the national park before travelling, as the site can close in the monsoon.

        • Small rocky island just west of Bamboo Island with a narrow beach on its east side and a fringing reef that was once a standard snorkelling stop. • The rocky point at the eastern end of Long Beach where snorkellers swim out from the sand to watch blacktip reef sharks, usually up to about two metres long and harmless to people. Early morning and late afternoon at high tide give the best chance; the sharks are shy, so float quietly. Not to be confused with the Shark Point dive site (Hin Musang) north-west of Phi Phi near the King Cruiser wreck.

        The islands look after themselves

A bay that was closed to heal, and opened again.

Maya Bay was shut from 2018 to 2022 so the reef could recover, and it came back with corals and blacktip sharks. Today boats stay outside, visitors walk in over a boardwalk and nobody swims. The same rule books protect Bamboo Island and the Bida pinnacles. The park fee you pay on the boat is what keeps it that way.
