Hippies Bar & Restaurant
This sprawling beach bar sits on a terrace just above the sand in Tonsai East. Most of it is built from driftwood and recycled materials. You sit low, on mats and triangular cushions around small tables.
It has been a fixture on this stretch of beach for a long time and was rebuilt after the 2004 tsunami. By day it is a calm place for a drink and a plate of Thai or Western food at friendly prices. TVs show live sport, and a separate room holds several pool tables.
After about 8 pm the mood changes. Expect fire shows, live music and DJs, plus a long cocktail list. Come around sunset if you want the view and a quieter start to the night.
