Ferries and boats on Koh Phi Phi

Last checked: October 2026

Short answer

Three kinds of boat matter on Koh Phi Phi. Ferries and speedboats connect Tonsai Pier with Phuket, Krabi, Ao Nang and Koh Lanta several times a day. Longtail taxis run from the pier to Long Beach, Laem Tong and the other beaches, with no timetable and a price agreed before you board. And every morning a fleet of longtails and speedboats leaves for Phi Phi Leh, Maya Bay and Bamboo Island.

Ferries and speedboats to the mainland

All public boats use Tonsai Pier. The main routes and recent prices, one way: Phuket Rassada Pier, ferry about two hours for ฿450 to ฿700, speedboat about one hour for ฿700 to ฿1,000, departures roughly 08:00 to 15:00. Krabi Klong Jilad Pier, ferry about two hours for ฿400 to ฿500, speedboat about one hour. Ao Nang Nopparat Thara Pier via Railay, about two hours by ferry. Koh Lanta Saladan Pier, ferry about one hour, speedboat 30 to 45 minutes, mainly November to April.

Leaving the island, the first boats go at about 08:00 and the last at around 15:30. Buy the ticket the day before at one of the agencies in the village or online, and come to the pier 30 minutes early. Big ferries are steadier than speedboats; if you get seasick, take the ferry and sit outside at the back.

Longtail taxis between the beaches

There is no road to the other beaches, so the longtail is the taxi. The stand is at Tonsai Pier. Long Beach takes five to ten minutes, recently about ฿100 to ฿150 per person by day and more after dark. Laem Tong and Loh Bagao in the north take about 45 minutes, and a private boat costs around ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 depending on the hour and the sea. Agree the fare before you step in.

Boats stop running late in the evening and in rough weather. If you stay on Long Beach, the walk back from Tonsai takes about 40 minutes over the hill and along the shore, fine by day, less so at night.

Boat trips to Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island

The classic half day longtail trip leaves Tonsai about 06:00 or 13:30 and visits Viking Cave, Pileh Lagoon, Loh Samah with its reef sharks, Maya Bay and Monkey Beach, about ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 per person plus the ฿400 park fee in cash. The full day adds Bamboo Island and a snorkel stop at Shark Point, about ฿1,500 to ฿2,000. Speedboats cover the same loop faster and cost more; sunset trips add plankton snorkelling after dark.

Maya Bay allows one hour per visit, no swimming and no boats in the bay. Your boat anchors at Loh Samah on the other side and you walk across the island on the boardwalk. From 1 August to 30 September the bay is closed.

Tips

  • Keep shoes that can get wet. Longtails land on the sand and you wade the last metres.
  • Pay for the park ticket on the boat and keep it. It is valid for the day and checked at Maya Bay and Bamboo Island.
  • The sea is calmest early. Book the first trip of the day in every season.
  • How to get here from the airports: Getting there.
